We made our mark on the 'Welcome to Yukon' Sign :) Sam held me up and I almost took the "C" down with me ... almost. Watson Lake (July 26-27) - It was just under 7 hours to get to Watson Lake from Fort Nelson. Do I dare be open with you all? It will be hard not to judge, because honestly, we judged ourselves ha. It had been over a week since either of us had a hot shower. This was not ok. We went straight to the Rec Center once we got to Watson Lake and paid $5 to use their shower facility and sauna. That may have been the longest shower I`ve ever taken. We got permission to park outside the liquor store in town so we headed over, made some pina coladas, and got settled in. Home sweet home! The next morning Sam got up to work at 5 a.m. while I slept in of course, until he woke me up around 8 saying we have 20 minutes to get out of town so he can catch the next conference call. You see there is NO reception between "towns" and there are very few towns, so in order for him to work we need to stick to those with a population more than 20. We needed to make it to Whitehorse (about a 5 hour drive) in time for him to be on that call. But, we needed to hang our sign first!! Sign Post Forest (July 27) - We had all of 5 minutes to make our sign and find a spot. Luckily we had a piece of wood left over from making our canoe motor mount so Sam used the drill to carve in our names, state and year and I colored it in :) We were so focused on doing it quickly that once it was up we looked around and realized there were a bunch of empty posts for us to hang the sign on, and we nailed it into a tree. We feel really bad about it... Sorry Sign Post Forest!! It was fun to look around and see how creative some other people have gotten; using cutting boards, tin pans, hats, shoes, utensils, etc. Curious how this all started? Well, here is the origin of the place as told by Wikipedia, "In 1942, a simple sign post pointing out the distances to various points along the tote road being built was damaged by a bulldozer. Private Carl K. Lindley, serving with the 341st Engineers, was ordered to repair the sign, and decided to personalize the job by adding a sign pointing towards his home town, Danville Illinois, and giving the distance to it. Several other people added directions to their home towns, and the idea has been snowballing ever since." Pretty neat, eh? *Please note how annoyed Nelly looks in the picture with me ha. Whitehorse (July 27-28) - We got to the city in time and Sam jumped on his conference call right away while I made us some hot ham & cheese sandwiches. I really failed at photos in this spot, sorry guys. We were staying at the Walmart and I tell ya, this place was like its own little happy community of RV`s, travel trailers, vans, adventure mobiles, etc. While Sam was on his call, I decided to go for a walk with Nelly along the Yukon River which passes through the City. Whitehorse is Yukon`s capital so it actually has quite a bit to offer (if you`re willing to spend $$$). The walk was nice and peaceful, and Nelly enjoyed dipping her paws in the river. I threw a stick but I guess it was too cold for the Princess to go all the way in :) We ended up walking through a local market and I was pretty bummed to have left my wallet behind because their $2 samosas were calling my name! After the walk Sam and I left Nelly behind and walked to the brewery near by, Yukon Brewing ("beer worth freezin for"). With no bar (just taps up front by the register) or area to sit, it was a different brewery experience than those in WI, but they offered samples and that`s all that really matters. Sam is the beer drinker, I prefer sweet drinks (cider, wines, cocktails), so he sampled them all and I went with their recommendation of the two sweeter ones. Of course the one I ended up liking was only 3%. They get you roped in though, after sampling all their beer you feel like you have to buy something ... I think it was the most expensive 6-pack Sam will buy on our trip. We just relaxed for the rest of the night and went to bed early. Sam worked the next morning while I walked to the Starbucks to finally get this blog going! We left around 10:30 for our drive to Alaska!!
